Education Institutes, Centers and Laboratory Schools

Center for Urban Education

The Center for Urban Education works to improve the quality of education for students in urban schools. Current initiatives include:

  • Workshops and camps for school-age children that target English language learners in urban environments who are in the process of being mainstreamed into elementary and middle school programs and need help in acquiring academic language;
  • Aspiring Teacher's Program, which recruits high school students from underrepresented groups into the teaching profession; and
  • Assistant Principal Academy, a mentoring program for assistant principals.

Andrews Institute of Mathematics & Science Education

The Andrews Institute of Mathematics & Science Education is a collaborative effort between the College of Education and the College of Science & Engineering. Their mission is to:

  • Provide an environment for innovation and change in the preparation and education of individuals in mathematics and science education and to further conduct research in these areas; and
  • Involve the Fort Worth community through three major programs: Teacher Education Emphasizing Math and Science at TCU (TEEMS at TCU), Teacher Collaboration for Updating Science, Technology and Math Proficiency (TCU – STAMP), and Pupils Reviving Interest in Science and Math (PRISM).

Alice S. Neeley Special Education Institute

The Alice S. Neeley Special Education Institute provides an environment for innovation and change in special education through exemplary teaching, research and community outreach. The Institute fosters collaboration among TCU faculty and others nationally to ensure the highest standard of education and services to children with disabilities and their families. The mission is to serve the needs of children and youth with disabilities and their families in three ways:

  • Provide optimal learning environments for TCU students to become effective and ethical leaders in special education;
  • Engage students and faculty in research to identify and implement best practices in special education that meet the individualized needs of preschool through school-age children with disabilities; and
  • Allow participation in community outreach to enhance the inclusion of children and youth with disabilities and their families in community-based activities.

Starpoint and KinderFrogs Schools

The mission of the laboratory schools is to educate students and serve as sites for teacher preparation, practicum experiences, and educational research. Starpoint and KinderFrogs provide a variety of volunteer opportunities for TCU students. Both laboratory schools are members of the National Association of Laboratory Schools.

Starpoint provides a high-quality educational program for students with learning differences, ages 6-12 years. It is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

KinderFrogs provides developmentally appropriate education for preschool children with Down syndrome and other developmental delays. It is licensed by the Texas Department of Family Services and accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).
