Film, Television and Digital Media

Academic standards in the Department of Film, Television, and Digital Media (FTDM) are high. They include (but are not limited to) minimum GPAs, for students pursuing the FTDM major. Interested students should contact the department for current standards and procedures.

The department encourages students to see the media industries from multiple perspectives and prepares students for many different careers. After a set of three basic courses, students are required to take a mix of courses from three areas: production, industry and critical studies.

The Department of Film, Television, and Digital Media holds institutional memberships in the Broadcast Education Association, the National Association of Broadcasters, Texas Association of Broadcasters, Texas Association of Broadcast Educators, the International Communication Association, the International Television Association, and the University Film and Video Association.

Departmental facilities and resources include KTCU, the student-operated campus radio station; two digital soundstages; a New Media lab; post-production facilities, including Avid and Final Cut Pro; a Pro Tools suite with Foley stage; and the Gwendolyn P. Tandy Memorial Film Library, a teaching resource with a current total of more than 14,000 films and television programs on DVD, laser disc and VHS.

Roach Honors Program

FTDM majors who plan to pursue Departmental Honors must be members of the University Honors Program and should enroll in FTDM 30003 during their junior year and FTDM 40003 during the fall semester of their senior year.

Transfer Students

Transfer students admitted to TCU are not guaranteed admission to the FTDM major. All potential FTDM majors, including transfer students, must complete the three FTDM basic courses (FTDM 10113, 10123 and 10143) and then follow the procedures to compete in the major. Transfer students must submit a written request if they wish the department to consider accepting any substitutes for FTDM 10113, 10123 or 10143. Each request will be considered on an individual basis.

Internships

The Department of Film, Television, and Digital Media has an active supervised internship program that places students in television studios, film production companies, audience research companies and corporate/industrial media centers. Interns may be placed in major media markets such as Los Angeles, New York, London, in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex or in their hometowns. FTDM internships are available only to FTDM majors, and there are specific prerequisites. Interested students should contact the FTDM department for current standards and procedures.
